Advertisement is business. It is always the main ingredient in both real and digital world. It brings dollars to pockets. An ad is effective when it is being done attractively unique through a very good channel. However, the more informative the ad is the more annoying.

Advertising agencies should read this article.

Well at least most of these are relatively un-harmful to the environment, junk mail is a key annoyance for me, like most of the list it tries to target everyone and therefore targets no one, but worst of all your stuck with a bin full of glossy printed material that goes straight to the dump.
Another one for your list might be local business advertisements in movie theaters. I don't know which agencies are making these but dam, they are badly done.

Good lord, isn't that the truth. They're insidious, and as far as my own behaviour is concerned, if I can't find a way to get rid of the offending ad in seconds, I will sacrifice the content I was looking for when I arrived on that page by closing right out of it. Not only will I not click through or otherwise validate the ad, but I will develop a hostile sentiment towards the brand.

What I *didn't* know was about the pause ads in PVRs. I haven't watched mine in a long time so I've never seen one but the very idea is insidious!

To the companies who participate in such practices: don't think we don't remember what you subjected us to. I hope your ROI has been worth it because you're taking a pretty big risk.

Jon, agreed - until SPAM generates a negative ROI, then people will continue to flood our inboxes.

I feel the same way about banners ... although, much like email spam - it's likely to continue until they no longer generate $$$.

Thanks for the comment.

Great post. I thought I was being a little snobby when I wrote about some marketing practices I hate and the value of relationship marketing here - http://bit.ly/bLzt65.

SPAM will always be king of the hated marketing practices, but I don't see it going away any time soon. The scalability makes it worthwhile for shady people to send out millions of email for pennies (since most SPAM is illegally sent via botnets). Even a minuscule response rate can mean good money for spammers, unfortunately. Until they get a zero response rate, or technology somehow catches up with them (neither are likely), we'll have to put up with it.

Banner ads baffle me though. I might have clicked on a banner ad once or twice, but certainly have never been enticed to purchase anything from that medium.
