How Businesses Spend Their Social Media Dollars

Social media marketing seems to be an increasingly prevalent buzz word, and for good reason. What could still rightfully be referred to as an emerging industry, or new marketing avenue, social media marketing is growing faster than any other form of online marketing — evidenced by the increased spending by marketers, and brands.

Those stats on how small to medium business view social networks can't really be from 2006, can they?

    Hi Zack,

Great catch! It was a typo, supposed to be 2009.

    Now fixed ;-)

    Thank you!

Social media is growing, that's good.

Thank you. This is one of the most valuable pieces of collected data I've seen in a bit…grateful that you assembled it into one graphic. The numbers differ a bit from others I've seen in social media as a percentage of overall marketing spend by 2014, however this has to be considered a “best guess.”

Awesome article with great data. Im actually a bit surprised that SMB's aren't utilizing social media more. I wonder if its a generational gap? Most likely as the workforce gets younger and younger the use of social media will continue to rise.

This is great and very nicely laid out (nice original colors, too). I made this one of my three links on my Design Thought for the Day blog:

This is a great mash-up of the data and is pretty on target with what I hear from my clients and colleagues. Thanks for the work put in to this!

Regarding the Social Networking Sites bars it looks like we need to continue to focus on evangelism for adoption of SM in business. Could the “Somewhat” and “Not Very Beneficial” be indicative of failed or inexperienced execution?
I’m surprised to see MySpace to be such a strong factor. I would have projected YouTube and Twitter to have dwarfed MySpace. At least they do in my world.

It will be curious to see how Google Buzz will factor in to this 1 year from now…

Great data here, so glad Trey Pennington pointed us to you ;) and love that we can all share info vs being territorial with it.

When start doing online business, I think you need a very big capital and investment to promote it and get successful.

Great work on the stylish graphic. This is perfect to show to my community of internet marketing clients.

With YouTube having somewhat regular 1 Billion search days as of recent… Yup… online advertising will not be the wild west for much longer.

I know organisations that would like to use video and Youtube more, but are hindered by the relatively high costs (both hardware and technical knowledge) to make it worthwhile (i.e. few people are going to watch a crappy looking video).

As far as social media and viral marketing are concerned I think 95% of them are worthless but there are some really good campaigns to come out.

Actually, YouTube has become the 2nd largest search engine after Google and the 3rd most visited site after Google and Facebook. That's a lot of people looking at “crappy looking video(s)” and there is a certain amount of charm in the authenticity.

I am amazed to see that there's only few of them who discounted the capability of youtube to promote and generate leads. I agree with FBooks topping on the list however.

As the top social media for business mentor in Canada, I support these stats, although they are slightly dated, and specific to an group of industry sectors, not across the board. Excellent data, and most corporates have no idea how to do unmarketing at all. That is how I can live so darn well! LOL ;) http://passionpoweredbusiness.com Ron Davies

I agree Cynthia. This is not about video quality, it is about value in the market and visibility. Google owns YouTube, and sees video as an ever increasing asset in media. Expect it to rise :)

  • CINEMATIQ Magazine

@Lead Generations.. I agree. It's extremely difficult to reach out to people who are already getting so much “junk” mail especially on fb. Your title have to really stand out to get my attention. The reason the numbers are low or even if the number increase with using online social marketing, many companies will not have a good campaign plan and or will not take the time to invest in getting the write people to lead/carry out the online marketing plan. You have to think outside the box. Creating a video and just posting it in hopes of someone watching it is not enough. Everything must be interactive for the consumer or audience you are targeting.

  • http://www.acquisix.com Telemarketing Services

It also depends on the quality of the content and not just the medium used. If the campaign is able to move the target audience, I think it will work well whatever medium may be used. But companies should not use only one medium, I think all these forms of media work well together in ensuring a place in the minds of the consumers.

The campaign is able to move the target audience, I think it will work well whatever medium may be used. It attract the customer and  the other person  and they can bye what they  want.
