Numerous social media sites have witnessed explosive growth of their user bases in the last several years, but it’s a known fact that the type of user a site attracts varies greatly. Have you ever wondered which sites attract the most educated of social media users, or those that pull in the highest income? Below we map the demographics of the world’s most popular social media sites.

Really? MySpace is make a resurgence amongst people 0-17? That's surprising….

  • http://ethanbloch.com ethan

No problem! Glad you enjoyed :-)

  • http://ethanbloch.com ethan

Indeed. I think they like the crazy personalization aspect whereas Facebook at times can seem sterile.

MySpace also seems to still have a pretty good lock when it comes to music/bands – and I hear their new iteration, coming soon, is actually half-good.

  • macha

    Hey,

Does it include only US users or is it on a worldwide scale ?

    Thank you

  • brandonanderson

Wow. Unexpected resurgence of MySpace indeed. Did not see that coming.

Glad to see that social media is sill important to the upper categories re
higher education, higher income, older, etc.

Would also like to know this. Any help please?

There's something odd about this data, or are we to really believe that the largest segment of Facebook users have “some college”, but only 7% of them are between 18-24? Is Facebook a community of college dropouts? Please show your data and methodology.

The source is Google Ad Planner and their “…demographics are generated through demographic inference algorithms that combine third-party demographic data with Google sample data.”
So, they're not that trustable. Worst thing is this chart is all over the web like some kind of definitive source.

This would be useful if we knew (A) where the data came from and (B) when the data was gathered. That information changes rapidly. For example, in February 2009, women over 50 were the fastest growing segment on Facebook. By October, it was teenaged boys. It's important to get the latest, greatest information. Can you share your sources?

I agree it's important to know who . . . AND also why? Why did YOU join Facebook or twitter? Post answers here or at—http://tinyurl.com/rcl4rk-blog

    Hi,

I only use facebook and till todate I have experienced a dramatic change when it comes to building a huge community online that buys and sells your products :)

I love this information! I’d be interested to see raw numbers of users as well.

The info is good, if it is accurate. Yet, I find it hard to believe that marketing is accomplished on some of these sites. I tried Twitter and was creeped out over the “blah blah wants to follow you” and then when I was on myspace I got tired of all the things for games, and now on face book it is getting to be tiresome with all the farmvill, fishville and what not.

While no data is perfect, you have to take these results and combine them with your own experience. It’s really all about testing. This data may point you in a particular direction but your testing and results will tell you whether you’re going in the right direction. All the most successful Internet marketers test constantly to see what works and what doesn’t and what venues are most successful for their products or services. You must do the same.

I’d like to take a closer look at this data. Is there a larger version somewhere? If so, please send to amandaephillips@hotmail.com
