The Rise of Social Network Ad Spending

Social network ad spending is one again on the rise, argues a recent study by eMarketer, which predicts that US advertisers will spend nearly $1.7 billion on social sites this yea.  This estimate is a noticeable increase from initial 2010 projection made by eMarketer, which forecasted $1.3B for this year, as well as a 20% increase from 2009 spending. Of this spending, Facebook is expected to receive about half of all social network ad spending, at least in the US, with Myspace losing ground to the now preeminent social networking site. These points, as well the study’s other most interesting facts and figures are featured in the below graphic.

I would never have guessed that as many people use social media to make grocery purchase decisions as car purchase decisions. That’s a bad showing for cars imo.

Automotive co’s tend to treat social media like a pure push message channel. To bring that 2% up, I think they need to start treating social like an actual sales tool (Local dealers using social to find people in the market for cars and reach out to them, etc.)

I really dig this post. I have been pushing our clients (attorneys) towards social media. It is an inexpensive BRANDING medium for them, so why wouldn’t they. Feel free to check out my blog, http://attymarketing.com/ !

    Thanks,

@jkretch I don’t think social media will ever be used as a direct sales tool and for good reason. The truth is sites like Facebook, twitter, Digg etc. Is an area to be social. This creates an opportunity for local businesses to connect with their consumers on a human level e.g. community service, stories, events etc. Not pitch a product. By doing this properly the companies properly using social media, sell without selling… Just my thoughts.

@JustinHolderness Agreed for the most part. But I know that I would have actually appreciated a car co that reached out to me to offer help when I Tweeted about looking for a new car. I would’ve given that car co mad respect :)

So I guess it’s less about cold call sales, and more about finding qualified leads based on social media activity, and using social as a channel to reach out.

@jkretch I can agree with that! I think some would appreciate the gesture but others could be turned off… It’s the same risk you run with all advertising, nature of the beast! Maybe I should talk to our clients about implementing both methods and see where it goes?

Awesome insight! The crazy thing though…these trends don’t surprise me at all! What I really want to know is what the trends will be about 5 years from now. With so much of everything moving toward social media/online interaction, it almost makes you wonder if companies, especially your market giants, will utilize social media advertising exclusively. Pepsi took that stance during the Super Bowl last year, and I don’t think they’ll be the last!
