It’s no secret that social media sites are dramatically changing the way we live and conduct our lives online. But, what this means to, and how this involves women is commonly overlooked. Perhaps surprisingly, women are online and interacting on social sites just as much — if not, more — than their male counterparts. In fact, more than half of all American women participate in social media at least once a week, with, of course, younger women using social sites the most. The following is a graphic that takes a look at what sites women are using, as well as how much and why women are participating in social media.

Has someone done such a breakdown graphic for men anywhere?
Why would it be “surprising” that women are online and interacting on social sites just as much — if not, more — than their male counterparts?

  • Didn

I'm not sure I agree that this can be done with any degree of certainty as to gender. If a woman doesn't put down her gender, how do you gather that information?

There are so many cookies that track your inputs on one website and share it with others, it'd make your head spin!

Lots of ad networks can follow you from site to site, which is why you might keep getting targeted with the same ads (geared to your demographic), even though you never told the most recent website anything.

I think women are more passive participants than men, though. Men tend to shout off about any old thing, and I think women tend to be a bit more thoughtful. So on the surface it appears they're not as active as men.

Great set of statistics! I do believe that more and more women tend to use social media because as technology goes it is easy to understand, you can get up and running quickly and more women tend to use the computer to learn, grow, and seek out information.
